CHAPTER FIVE

SARAH slowly opened her eyes. She wasn’t sure what had woken her, but the room was dark, and for a while she lay there, trying to recall where she was and what had happened. The last thing she remembered as she’d drifted away had been the heavenly feel of the mattress beneath her, as though she was being enveloped in softness. Later, she’d stirred, feeling a chill in the air, but soon afterwards there had been the sensation of something floaty being draped over her, and she’d sunk back into a blissful, deep sleep.

Now she tried to sit up, her eyes becoming accustomed to the shadows and the faint glow of moonlight that seeped into the room through the curtains.

‘I didn’t mean to disturb you,’ James said softly, his voice deep and reassuringly calm. He switched on the bedside lamp, and a pool of golden light shimmered around her. ‘I saw that you were a bit restless, so I made some hot chocolate.’

‘Oh, thank you, that was thoughtful of you,’ she murmured, still drowsy. She frowned. ‘What time is it? How can it be dark? Surely I haven’t slept for all that long?’

He placed a tray on the bedside table and sat down on the edge of the wide bed. ‘It’s around ten o’clock. Once you settled down, you were well away.’

‘Oh, no…I can hardly believe it. How could I have done that?’ It suddenly struck her that she was supposed to be looking after the children, and she sat up straight in a panic. ‘The children…’

‘They’re fine. They’re fast asleep in the guest rooms. I told them they could sleep in their underwear for tonight.’

‘But…Oh, this is awful. I let them down. I should go to them…’

He laid a hand on her shoulder and gently pressed her back against the pillows. ‘You don’t have to go anywhere. I explained to them that you were very, very tired and that you needed to rest. Of course, they wouldn’t take my word for it and they insisted on coming up here to see you. Once they knew you hadn’t been kidnapped or whisked away anywhere, they were fine. They watched a DVD and then we made sandwiches and popcorn.’

‘You had popcorn in your kitchen?’ She sent him a doubtful look and he grinned, handing her a mug of hot chocolate.

‘Drink that. It’ll help you settle for the night. The popcorn was Sam’s. He bought a bag from the food stall and Rosie showed us how to heat it up in the microwave. I had no idea you could do that with corn.’

Her mouth curved. ‘Well, I guess we learn something new every day.’ She sipped the creamy chocolate and sighed with contentment. ‘This is delicious.’ Then she frowned. ‘I really should get them home.’

‘No, you don’t have to do that.’ He shook his head. ‘It would be a shame to wake them.’

She chewed at her lower lip. ‘We’ve been a lot of trouble to you, disturbing your peace. You probably had plans for this evening.
